The multitude and sheer complexity of occurrences which bring anything into being is central to my work. I use lines as a way in which to create a form or a structure. In the same way that it took a lifetime’s ‘occurrences’ to create the work, it is often a multitude of lines which bring about form. These lines have until recently been the only elements which make up the work. This was a way of questioning identity, is there more to us than just a mix of occurrences; and by extension is the creative act determined by a history of occurrences rather than any notion of personal language. I am currently working on a series of works based on ‘conditional love’. In these I have started combining lines with other elements to create forms, the lines force these other elements to behave in a hopefully beautiful but unnatural way.
